Warning Signs of Heart Disease & Heart Attack / Educational Video
Preventing Heart Disease and Heart Attack Educational Video. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
National Institutes of Health; National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; Act in Time to Heart Attack Signs; Item #56-042N, September 2001; The dramatic, moving stories of three heart attack survivors and their families illustrate the importance of heeding heart attack warning signs and seeking medical care quickly. They vividly convey how a real heart attack may differ from the stereotypical “movie heart attack” and how getting immediate treatment can save lives. The warm and sympathetic narration by an emergency department physician explains what a heart attack is, the treatments that can save lives if given quickly, why many heart attack victims delay seeking care, and how to make a heart attack survival plan. Useful for health fairs, medical waiting rooms, community groups, and home viewing. Producer: National Institutes of Health; Keywords: hhs.gov; public_safety; Creative Commons license: Public Domain. Heart Attack Warning Signs. A heart attack is a frightening event, and you probably don’t want to think about it. But, if you learn the signs of a heart attack and what steps to take, you can save a life–maybe your own. What are the signs of a heart attack? Many people think a heart attack is sudden and intense, like a “movie” heart attack, where a person clutches his or her chest and falls over. The truth is that many heart attacks start slowly, as a mild pain or discomfort. If you feel such a symptom, you may not be sure what’s wrong. Your symptoms may even come and go. Even those who have had a heart attack may not recognize their symptoms, because the next attack can have entirely different ones. Women may not think they’re at risk of having a heart attack–but they are. Learn more about women and heart attack. It’s vital that everyone learn the warning signs of a heart attack. These are: Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort. Other symptoms. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness. Learn the signs–but also remember: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, you should still have it checked out. Fast action can save lives-maybe your own. After you learn more about heart attack, try a brief quiz to see if you know what to do if you or someone else has warning signs. How do you survive a heart attack? Fast action is your best weapon against a heart attack. Why? Because clot-busting drugs and other artery-opening treatments can stop a heart attack in its tracks. They can prevent or limit damage to the heart–but they need to be given immediately after symptoms begin. The sooner they are started, the more good they will do–and the greater the chances are for survival and a full recovery. To be most effective, they need to be given ideally within 1 hour of the start of heart attack symptoms. You can reduce your risk of having a heart attack—even if you already have coronary heart disease (CHD) or have had a previous heart attack. The key is to take steps to prevent or control your heart disease risk factors. Six Key Steps To Reduce Heart Attack Risk; Taking these steps will reduce your risk of having a heart attack: Stop smoking; Lower high blood pressure; Reduce high blood cholesterol; Aim for a healthy weight; Be physically active each day. Manage diabetes.

yea i had a bad …
yea i had a bad anxiety attack and i couldnt sleep or anything because of the nerves and the thought of dying, my heart has never gone that fast before so thats why i thought something was wrong. The best thing to do is just chill out and relax dont worry about anything, the more you stress about it the longer it will stay there, i dont know what it is, its like the brain thinks something happening but really nothing is happening you know?

how do you sleep? a …
how do you sleep? a lot of people that sleep on their left side can get pains in their left arm, there’s a lot of reasons people get pain in their arms, like i woke up the other day and my arm was hurting because of the way i was sleeping on it, i lift weights too and that can cause my arms to hurt now and then, still its better to be safe than sorry, if you think the pain is bad enough go see a doc.

I’m nearly 21, I …
I’m nearly 21, I tend to drink a lot in order to feel better about myself, but as we all know, alcohol only makes anxiety worse. It suppresses it, but it bounces back up once you’re sober, and suppresses YOU. The only danger in anxiety is letting it rule your life, this is just a message for people if you use things like alcohol/cigarettes or whatever, we should try not to depend on them, and depend on what keeps us alive, the heart.

The best thing to …
The best thing to with an anxiety attack is get reassurence and that in itself beat the anxiety attack. So in your state id say see a doc, i dont reckon theres anything wrong with you but just to put your mind at ease you shud see a doc, anyone who thinks they have something wrong with their heart should see a doc for peace of mind. Anxiety attacks can be so bad, you believe you’re going to die, and the fear dam… it you up. See a doc if you think u have anything wrong. Anything.

Im not at all …
Im not at all overweight the doc said, im only 20 yrs old, i saw the doc, cos even 20 yrs olds can have heart problems as we all know, so i went to see him and he took an ESD test, i think thats what its called and it shows if you have any irregular heart beats and can show if you have a heart murmur and stuff like that, he said you have all the symptoms of an anxiety attack, stressed out, thoughts of dying, panicking, nervousness, feel weak, sweating, cant sleep properly.

are you stressed …
are you stressed about anything, sometimes when people think they’re having a heartattack they get so stressed out that it turns into an anxiety attack and you think you’re really going to have a heart attack, my heart was racing and i thought i was finished, i really did, i thought i was going to die and that was it. But like 5 days later i just made myself calm down, my hear was still going like crazy but its just your brain, its like a panic attack.

neck or jaw then u …
neck or jaw then u shud go, but try not to mistake anxiety with a heart attack. Anxiety is like havin flu symptoms and comes on because of stress and pressure, its like a breakdown and u feel like shit, you sweat, heart races, u feel weak and u feel like you’re gonna die, let me tell you that the worst part of an anxiety attack is the thought of dying. Its like you 100% believe you’re gonna die but its brain doin it, but really ur fine. It oes after a few days, just relax.

Many people think …
Many people think they’re having a heart attack but infact it could just be anxiety. An anxiety attack makes you panic, and it makes you feel like you’re gonna die but really you’re fine. It can cause your heart to beat really fast but still everything is fine. If you feel pain in your arm shoulder

I have already …
I have already suffered 2 heart attack & have what my phsyican calls dangerously high triglycerides & LDL, and i was told that if i do not get these levels under control i will have another. This did frighten me and i knew i needed to do something to reverse this damage. I knew plant sterols were powerful so i tried Sterolyn, and i’m very proud to say that my triglycerides have gone from 512 all the way down to 155. LDL count down from 240 to 132. Great product.
