What are the risks? Side effects are common and normal, and consist of abdominal cramping, pain, nausea, sweating, and feeling faint during the procedure, cramping and pain for 2 to 3 days following the procedure, as well as bleeding for up to 2 weeks. True complications occur in approximately 1 to 2% of vacuum aspirations. Allergic reactions to anesthesia or other medications given can occur. It is vitally important that you report any over-the-counter or prescription medications as well as illegal drugs so that the anesthetics can be adjusted accordingly. Bacterial infection can occur during the procedure when surgical tools enter the uterus, while symptoms won’t occur for 2 to 3 days after the procedure. Suction Aspiration abortion, also called Vacuum Aspiration, is the most common abortion procedure in practice today. For the procedure to begin, the woman’s cervix must be manually dilated with a series of rods to allow for the insertion of a hollow plastic tube with a sharp cutting-tip. This tube is connected to a suction machine that is able to pull the tiny embryo or fetus apart (killing him or her in the process). After the loss of our son Zachary in 2006, we were shocked to have found out we were pregnant again since I have infertility. Komodo dragons were discovered by Western scientists in 1910. Their large size and fearsome reputation make them popular zoo exhibits. In the wild their range has contracted due to human activities and they are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. They are protected under Indonesian law, and a national park, Komodo National Park, was founded to aid protection efforts.

Etymology

The Komodo dragon is also known as the Komodo monitor or the Komodo Island monitor in scientific literature, although this is not very common.

Evolutionary history

The evolutionary development of the Komodo dragon started with the Varanus genus, which originated in Asia about 40 million years ago and migrated to Australia. Around 15 million years ago, a collision between Australia and Southeast Asia allowed the varanids to move into what is now the Indonesian archipelago. The Komodo dragon is believed to have differentiated from its Australian ancestors 4 million years ago, extending their range to as far east as the island of Timor. Dramatic lowering of sea level during the last glacial period uncovered extensive stretches of continental shelf that the Komodo dragon colonized, becoming isolated in their present island range as sea levels rose afterwards.

In the wild, an adult Komodo dragon usually weighs around 70 kilograms (150 lb), although captive specimens often weigh more. The largest verified wild specimen was 3.13 metres (10.3 ft) long and weighed 166 kilograms (370 lb), including undigested food. The Komodo dragon has a tail as long as its body, as well as about 60 frequently-replaced serrated teeth that can measure up to 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) in length. Its saliva is frequently blood-tinged, because its teeth are almost completely covered by gingival tissue that is naturally lacerated during feeding. This creates an ideal culture for the virulent bacteria that live in its mouth. It also has a long, yellow, deeply-forked tongue.

The Komodo dragon uses its tongue to detect taste and smell stimuli, as with many other reptiles, with the vomeronasal sense using a Jacobson’s organ, a sense that aids navigation in the dark. With the help of a favorable wind and its habit of swinging its head from side to side as it walks, Komodo dragons may be able to detect carrion from 49.5 kilometres (2.56 mi) away.

Bites on human digits by a lace monitor (V. varius), a Komodo dragon, and a spotted tree monitor (V. scalaris) were observed, and all produced similar results in humans: rapid swelling within minutes, localized disruption of blood clotting, shooting pain up to the elbow, with some symptoms lasting for several hours.[24] It has been proposed that all venomous lizards, together with their nonvenomous relatives and all snakes, share a common venomous ancestor.[24]

Komodo dragons also possess virulent bacteria in their saliva, of which more than 28 Gram-negative and 29 Gram-positive strains have been isolated.[25] These bacteria cause septicemia in their victim; if an initial bite does not kill the prey animal and it escapes, it will commonly succumb within a week to the resulting infection. The most harmful bacterium in Komodo dragon saliva appears to be a deadly strain of Pasteurella multocida, from studies performed with laboratory mice.[26] There is no specific antidote to the bite of a Komodo dragon, but it can usually be treated by sterilizing the wounded area and giving the patient large doses of antibiotics. If not treated promptly, gangrene can quickly develop around the bite, which may require amputation of the affected area. Because the Komodo dragon appears immune to its own microbes, much research has been done searching for the antibacterial molecule(s) in the hopes of human medicinal use.

There are a lot of smaller-school guys that are doing good things in this league, said Flacco. All you have to do is have confidence in yourself to go out and play in every game, and then well see what happens from there.

The fact that Flacco and Ryan, who also piloted his club to the postseason, were in competition for the award also discounts those that think rookie quarterbacks should not immediately start.

Ive said all along I thought it would be a benefit for me to play right away, Flacco explained. I couldnt imagine the difference if I hadnt played from the start. I have 19 games under my belt.

I feel like a part of the locker room and that the guys know who I am and what I can do. It gives me a lot more confidence going into camp already knowing the offense.

But while Ryan was basically named Atlantas starter from Day 1, Flaccos course to the first string was aided by chance circumstances when Kyle Bollers year was ended due to a shoulder injury and Troy Smith missed the end of preseason with a blood clot in his lung.

You cant do anything about what happened, Flacco said. But I wanted to be in there to get the experience. I think you need that to succeed as a young quarterback.

For Flacco, being welcomed to a veteran-laden locker room was another factor in his rapid development.

Much of that stemmed from linebacker Ray Lewis, whom many regard as the heart and soul of the organization.

The important role that Ray played was that when he accepted me, it made it easier for everyone else to accept me, said the signal caller. From the beginning when I came in, Ray at least acted like he liked me, so I think when everyone else on the team saw that, it opened the door for others.

It seems that fans have taken to Joe Cool, as well.

His No. 5 jersey is now ubiquitous around Baltimore. Wacko for Flacco is now a Charm City anthem. And in winning the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year award, fans around the world are voicing their support for the humble 24-year-old.
